Talking about techniques...
A quick primer on threadpainting from Helen in the UK:

The idea is that you use 3 strands to be able to change colours gradually
creating a shaded effect.  Start off with AAA for a few rows, drop A and use
B so you have AAB for a few rows.  Then drop A and start B so you have ABB
for a few rows.  Drop A and start B so you have BBB for a few rows.  In each
instance you the thread you have dropped you cut off and weave in.  This
creates a shaded effect rather than an abrupt colour change.
